When I was a young adult, I read adult fiction. Agatha Christie. Victoria Holt. William Faulkner (although I will admit to reading him under duress.)
And the irony? Now that I am an adult, I write young adult fiction. My stories feature protagonists I would love to know -- ordinary girls with visible quirks and unseen depths. I hope their journeys will inform, entertain, and inspire.
